I have lived with quadriplegia from a car accident since 1971 and use a wheelchair. I was seated in the specially designated seating area for wheelchair users waiting for the curtain to rise when an able-bodied woman swept in breathlessly and plonked herself in the fixed seat beside me. In a pronounced American accent she declared loudly: " I didn't spend all this money to sit next to someone like you!" Now she didn't get up and move because she had no choice as likewise I didn't either. Normally not short of a pithy rejoinder to an insult, I was so shocked by this statement I wept in silence. The irony is that she was seated in the very leper zone normally reserved for undesirables like me which were on-sold cheaply at the last minute should no other wheelchair user claim them.<br /> Thank you so much for your column/blog.i draw great consolation from your observations and share them frequently with colleagues and friends.
